Bedtime with KO last night.
KO: Mum, you forgot to put the lid back on the cream.
Me: Oh sorry about that. I forgot.
KO [putting the lid on]: You’re bad.
Me: I’m bad??? Honey, that doesn’t mean I’m bad. I just made a mistake.
KO: No, YOU’RE BAD.
Me: No, I’m NOT. I made a mistake. It’s okay to make mistakes. It doesn’t mean I’m bad.
KO: Nooooo Mum!!! I’m not saying that!! I’m saying YOUR BAD. It’s just a thing. You know, when someone makes a mistake!!
Me: Oh!!!!!! You mean, that’s MY BAD??
And THAT my son, is why good grammar is important.
Bedtime with KO tonight:
KO: Do I have anything to outgrow?
Me: Hmm??? Do you mean clothes?
KO: No, I mean anything that I *do*. Do I have anything to outgrow still before I’m grown up?
Me: Yes. Yes, you do.
KO: Mummy, what do you like best about me?
Me (slowly): What do I like best about you … ?
KO (laughs): It’s really hard to choose, isn’t it?
Me: It is!
KO (with a “eureka!” expression): I know!
KO: The thing you like best is that I am loved.
Me: Hmmm … I think the thing I like best about you is who you are. You are very special and there’s nobody else like you in the world. What do you like best about me?
KO: Hmmm … [pause] … the thing I like best about you is that you’re alive.
[Bedtime with KO tonight.]
KO muses aloud, “What if God is a villain?”
And a little while later …
“What if there’s more evil than good in the world?”
And then awhile later …
“Are there more boys than ladies in the world? Or more ladies than men? Or more boys than girls? Or more ladies than girls?”
Finally, he stops voicing random questions, and just lies quietly, eyes fixed open. I ask him, “What are you thinking of?”
He replies, “I’m thinking of a sausage wearing a hat, lying down on a chair that is on a diagonal. I think he’s wearing a cowboy hat.”
KO often asks me why I’m laughing.
